The Three P’s:

What Belongs in Your Toilet—and What Doesn’t

Your toilet may seem like a convenient trash chute, but treating it that way can cause costly clogs, damage local water systems, and harm the environment. Here’s the breakdown of what should never be flushed.

What you can flush: The Three P’s. Poop, nature’s call number two. Pee, call number one. Toilet paper, specifically designed to break down quickly in water. That’s it! The Three P’s are all that sewer systems are built to handle. Anything else can lead to backups, blocked pipes, and unexpected plumbing bills.

What you should never flush, even if packaging claims “flushable,” think twice. These items are notorious for wreaking havoc in pipes: Feminine hygiene products, pads, tampons, and applicators don’t disintegrate like toilet paper. They expand and clog. Wipes, baby wipes, makeup wipes, and even “flushable” wipes resist breakdown and tangle into massive clogs. Paper towels and tissues are designed to be sturdy, not water-soluble. They’re not made to dissolve. Medication, flushing pills introduces chemicals into waterways that treatment plants often can’t filter out- contaminating water and harming wildlife.

Bonus tips to keep your plumbing happy: Keep a trash bin next to the toilet for everything that’s not the three p’s. Educating family and guests, what feels like common sense to you might be news to them. If you’re unsure about an item, don’t flush it. Your pipes (and plumber) will thank you.

Small habits= big impact. By following the Three P’s, you’re doing your part to keep your homes plumbing, your city’s sewer system, and the planet flowing smoothly.
